Simple design = beauty

Which is more aesthetically pleasing – a simple design, or an ornate design? Some people like ornate, others are drawn to simplicity. Yet simple, functional pieces are not devoid of aesthetic appeal. In fact furniture styles such as Danish modern, and Shaker, both have simple forms, yet exude aesthetic appeal. The aesthetics are within the simplicity of the design. Consider the two pieces of furniture below. One is a Shaker cupboard, the other an armoire from Europe. The Shaker piece is functional, yet simple. The armoire is also functional, yet it is much more ornate. Which is more aesthetically pleasing?

functionVSform

The answer is both. Ultimately the answer is in the eye of the beholder, however no-one can make the case that the armoire is more beautiful simply because it is more ornate.
